Learn and interact with policy-makers:As a APCAC Washington Doorknock delegate, you will have a chance to speak firsthand with the new officials just coming into place in the new Obama Administration, as well as new Members of Congress, who will be deciding the future of US policy toward Asia. The APCAC report just released from the Spring Conference, entitled Leveraging Trade to Stimulate Growth: Recommendations for the New Administration from Americans Working in Asia, will be a useful summary for Washington officials of the range of issues that American businesses and Americans face in Asia. Here is the structure of the 2009 Washington Doorknock:Sunday Evening, June 14 Dinner orientation meeting in downtown DC restaurant to orient delegates and go over the meetings and talking points. Monday, June 15 We meet at breakfast for an all-day program at headquarters of the US Chamber of Commerce in Washington, DC, – Interactive speakers from President Obama’s new Administration, covering international trade, business and foreign policy affecting the US and Asia. Your chance to give them your views! (Click here to see the list of invited speakers) – Evening event with US Chamber Asia Team (proposed). Tuesday, June 16 We meet up at the US Chamber and go to Capitol Hill. Teams of APCAC participants will have a full day of meetings with key Members of the House of Representatives and their staffs. Wednesday, June 17—Morning – Back to Capitol Hill for meetings with key Senators and their committee staffs – Afternoon – Meetings with policy makers at the US Trade Representatives Office, the US Department of Commerce and the State Department. We will meet up for a wrap up session at the US Chamber. Thursday, and Friday, June 18-19 time for country delegations to arrange meetings on country specific issues. It is a good time to meet with the Ambassadors to Washington from the country your delegation represents. APCAC will also arrange a meeting with Akin Gump law firm, which is working on Section 911. Talking points on key issues before the Congress and the Administration are being prepared, and will be circulated shortly. The Report from the Spring Conference forms the basis for our key messages this year. APCAC will present the 2009 APCAC Award to one or more key policy makers who have demonstrated a strong commitment to Asia Pacific interests. We’ve kept the Registration Fee LOW !!Everyone’s budget is tight this year, and APCAC’s Board voted at the Spring meeting in Singapore to keep the registration fee to only $200. Hopefully you can combine a trip to Washington with other business or vacation travel in mid June and maximize this worthwhile opportunity to engage with Washington decision-makers. (APCAC will subsidize part of the cost of the Doorknock expenses, but others, including some dinners, will have to be shared among delegates.) Delegates must make their own hotel arrangements.
